Helen & Douglas House Hospice.

A Charity Close to our hearts.

In Memory of Oliver James Young 27/2/2006–26/02/2012.

Company Secretary, Roy Young, his partner and his partner's family suffered a blow when his nephew was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour (cancer) at the beginning of December 2011. Just three months after diagnosis, he sadly lost his life the day before his 6th Birthday.

During those last few months he was looked after by the amazing people at Helen & Douglas House Hospice in Oxford, where the whole family were cared for. They always made the family really welcome every time they visited and the atmosphere was always really positive and happy.

Helen & Douglas House is a registered charity providing respite, emergency and end of life care for children and young adults with life-shortening conditions, as well as help and support for the whole family. The two hospice houses are bright, vibrant and positive places where the emphasis is on living life to the full, even when that life may be short.

Roy cannot thank the staff and volunteers at Helen House enough, for making Ollie's last few months as comfortable as possible, whilst looking after his Brother-in-law and sister-in-law and Ollie’s older brother at the same time.

They even helped make some of his wishes come true; namely;

Seeing his parents get married -

A wedding was organised in just over a week and was held in the Convent Chapel, in the grounds of the Hospice. A wonderful day for all the family and friends.

A trip to see Tottenham Hotspur train on their home ground (sadly, Ollie was not well enough to go, but his older brother and Daddy went and brought him back lots of pictures and momentos).

A visit from Ollies favourite band ONE DIRECTION. The boys came to see Ollie at home (on their day off) and played on the Wii; played football with his older brother Alfie, and sang Ollie’s favourite song 'That's what makes you beautiful' to the family. This song went on to win the Brit Awards, Best single of 2012, which of course the family put down to Ollie converting ALL of us into lifetime fans! (Ollie's Mum was slightly star struck and it was great to see pictures of her laughing like a teenage girl again!)

Roy said "We have felt so helpless not being able to do anything for Ollie, but we will always be incredibly grateful to Helen House for what they did for the family. What we can do for Helen & Douglas House is to ensure that Ollie's legacy is to help the charity continue with the amazing work they do for families like ours. To that end we want to raise as much money as possible to help them carry on their work.

It costs over £4.5m per annum to run the two houses, most of which is funded by donations, so as you can imagine, every single penny counts.
